Babolat Cup UK 2015 Champions Crowned!

The Babolat Cup UK returned for its second year at the Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham. After a wet start to the weekend, there was fantastic tennis on show throughout with Avon’s James Vincent (left) and Wiltshire’s Amelia Bissett (right) taking the 2015 titles.

James cruised to the final without losing a set where he faced the #1 seed Jack Batchelor (Yorks), who had also progressed to the final winning all his matches in straight sets. In a tightly contested first set, it was Batchelor who managed to edge it taking the set 7-5. However James showed great determination and grit, taking the second set 6-4 to level the match and send the final into a decisive match tiebreak. James was able to take this momentum into the match tiebreak coming through 10-6 to win the title.

Amelia’s run to the final was not as straight forward as Jame’s had been, with her coming through a tough QF match against Aisling Mcgrane (Hamps) in three sets. Amelia then faced #3 seed Sally Pethybridge (Surrey) but came through in straights to face Jayanne Palma (Yorks). Jayanne had swept through the draw without the loss of a set, beating #1 seed Tiana Fox (Sussex) in the semi finals. In the final Amelia didn’t allow Jayanne to settle, taking the first set 6-3 before closing out the match by the same score in the second set to become the 2015 Babolat Cup UK girls champion.

In the boys consolation draw Joel Good (Bucks) was victorious beating Edred Opie (Wilts) in the final. Edred had earlier defeated Sam Reeve (Cheshire) in a marathon match lasting over two and half hours. In the girls consolation draw there was success for local player Mia Faulkner who beat fellow Warwickshire and Edgbaston Priory Club player Mary Hoggard in a match of ups and downs 4-1 1-4 10-5.

Many congratulations to our Babolat Cup Champions, but also a big thanks to all the players and parents who supported this event and helped make it a special experience for all involved.
We look forward to hosting James and Amelia at Roland Garros next year, where they will be invited along with a chaperone, to attend the famous clay court grand slam as guests of Babolat.
